Doug received his Bachelor of Science (Economics) degree from the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point in 1981 having served as one of the four cadet regiment commanders. Commissioned into the United States Army, Doug served as an Airborne, Ranger, field artillery officer.
After earning his MBA from Harvard in 1988, Doug taught courses in personal finance, investments, and economics while serving as an Assistant Professor at West Point from 1988 through 1991. Because of his interest in personal finance, teaching, and helping others, Doug completed an extensive course of study through the College for Financial Planning, earning the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation in 1991. As part of his ongoing education effort, Doug earned the Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®) designation from the Center for Fiduciary Studies in 2005.
Doug has been quoted in national and local publications including The Wall Street Journal, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, Investment Advisor magazine, Investment News, Senior Market Advisor, the Austin Business Journal, and the Austin American-Statesman. In addition, he has contributed chapters to two books and regularly makes presentations to church, civic, and business groups.
In 2003, Doug was selected to help train those studying to become Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) practitioners by teaching the introductory course, "Fundamentals of Financial Planning," and the capstone course, "Strategies and Case Studies" for the University of Texas Financial Planning Certificate Program. In 2006, he was honored for “Excellence in Teaching.”
